The Purple Orchids is a branch of The Red Hat Society, a society of ladies of a certain age, originally set up in America in 1998. In the past ten years The Red Hat Society have emerged from very humble beginnings into the leading global social networking organisation for women approaching fifty and beyond. We have become a force in the world, one that is known and respected for the way we support each other and make the world a happier place with our humour and vitality. The Red Hat Society began as a result of a few women deciding to greet middle age with verve, humour and elan. We believe silliness is the comedy relief of life, and since we are all in it together, we might as well join, red-gloved hands and go for the gusto together. Underneath the frivolity, we share a bond of affection, forged by common life experiences and a genuine enthusiasm for wherever life takes us next.
The Red Hat Society is not an organisation but a disorganisation. The only rules in The Red Hat Society are:
If you have reached your 50th birthday you must wear a purple outfit and a red hat. If you are under 50, you must wear a lilac outfit and a pink hat for all gatherings. On your 50th birthday you will undergo a formal "reduation ceremony" which will mark your reaching the golden age of indiscretion !
